Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park lies in eastern Rwanda, hugging the border with Tanzania. It’s characterized by woodland, swamps, low mountains and savannah. The varied terrain shelters wildlife including zebras, giraffes, elephants, lions and hundreds of bird species, such as the rare shoebill stork. In the southern part of the park, vast Lake Ihema is home to hippos and crocodiles.

Akagera is the best place for Game Drives in Rwanda since it is now a home to Big Five and other animals including anteloppe, zebras, elands, crocodiles, different bird species, etc.

Activities in The Park

Akagera Game Drive

Akagera Game drive is where you will be accompanied by a Guide who is knowledgeable about the flora and fauna found in the Akagera National Park. On a game drive safari, no one gets out of vehicle unless the park guide sees it as safe to get out and take a look around. For longer game drives take a snack or lunch from the lodge and in our case, we will provide drinking water for you. With Land Tours and Travel guided Nature Walks and Birding Walks can also be taken at Akagera National Park – Rwanda.

Boat Ride Safari

Boating Safaris are normally the highlight of a visit to a park in East Africa and so it it is with a boating safari on Lake Ihema in Akagera National Park. Lake Ihema has one of the largest concentration of hippos in East Africa and it certainly is a sight to behold and so are the very large crocodiles that you will find along the shores of the lake.

Birding in Akagera

Akagera National Park is especially good for birding, with over 480 species attracted by its diverse habitat. Savannah birds and raptors are prevalent and several endemic species such as the red-faced barbet are often seen. Short boat trips are available on Akagera’s lakes which will give you the opportunity to get close to the plentiful waterbirds including numerous African fish eagles, marabou stork, crowned cranes, open-billed stork, cormorants, herons and egrets. If you are lucky you may even get to see the elusive shoebill stork.

Camping in Akagera Park

At present, there are only two accommodation options in Akagera National Park aside from camping. Ruzizi Tented Lodge opened in 2013 and is close to the main gate to the south. Managed by African Parks, it’s a pretty bush camp on the shores of Lake Ihema. The other option, Akagera Game Lodge, has been ‘under restoration’ for some years and, although it is partially open, it’s of a significantly lower standard. However, it was taken over by Mantis Resorts in early 2018 and so we’re expecting a significant improvement when the refurbishments are complete.
